The Mass CPR Programme for Lay Rescuer was held on 20th June 2009 in the SMJK Seg Hwa School Hall, Segamat. It was one of the school co-curricular projects. The main aim is to teach all the members of the uniformed bodies and teachers the correct techniques on how to perform CPR when a person is not breathing or circulating blood adequately. The participants comprised of 419 students and teachers. It was carried out successfully and certificate of attendance was given to all the participants who had performed correctly on CPR by St. John Ambulance Malaysia.
The Senior Assistant for Academic Mr. Soh Seow Min represented the school principal in his opening speech requested all the teachers and uniformed bodies to learn the correct techniques on how to perform CPR under the guidance and assistance from the well trained members of St. John Ambulance Malaysia School’s Unit trainer. Then, the teachers and students can assist the victim who needs help within the school area and at home if he/she is unable to breathe or no response from the patient by performing CPR correctly.
The Area Doctor Dr. Ong Show Sik congratulated the school for organizing this programme. It was one of the Health Care Community projects. The letters in CPR stand for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a combination of rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and chest compressions. The Lay Rescuer can use the DRABC methods. D is for Danger. R is for check Response. A is for Open Airway. B is for check Breathing. C is for Circulation. CPR is most successful when administered as quickly as possible, but you must first determine if it is necessary. Rescue breathing is begun when a person is not breathing. CPR can be performed on a victim such as shock, fainting, drowning, heart attack, choking until help arrives. Therefore, I called upon all the teachers and students to take this golden opportunity to learn CPR.
The Parent Teachers Association Chairman Mr. Vincent Pang officiated the ceremony. He said that the St. John Ambulance members could make use of their first aid knowledge to help the victims in the case of emergency while waiting for the ambulance arrives. He was very happy to see the invited guests and all the school teachers and students in the school hall attending this function.
After that, CPR which was taped in a CD was played and shown on the screen to the audience. After the show, a live demonstration on CPR was shown to the participants by the members of St. John Ambulance School’s Unit. The function ended by noon.
